OVI Suspect Claims Minimal Alcohol Consumption Following Highway Stop
Westlake police reported an incident involving a suspected operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI) early in the morning on March 14. Officers observed a Toyota Avalon weaving erratically while traveling on Interstate 90, prompting them to initiate a traffic stop at approximately 4 a.m.
According to the police statement, the vehicle exhibited alarming behavior, including drifting fully onto the shoulder of the road before returning to the highway. Concerned for public safety, the officers approached the vehicle to assess the situation.
Upon interaction with the driver, identified as a 43-year-old woman from North Olmsted, officers detected signs of impairment. When questioned about her alcohol consumption, the woman stated she had not consumed “much at all.” However, her demeanor and the condition of the vehicle raised concerns among the officers.
Field sobriety tests were conducted to evaluate her level of impairment. Following these assessments, the woman was arrested on suspicion of OVI. She was subsequently taken to the Westlake police station, where a breath test was administered. The results indicated a blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeding the legal limit.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving, particularly during late-night hours when individuals may underestimate their level of intoxication. Law enforcement officials remind the community of the importance of responsible drinking and the dangers posed by impaired driving.
In addition to this incident, the Westlake Police Department’s blotter included several other noteworthy events. Officers responded to various calls, including disturbances, thefts, and traffic violations, reflecting the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safety within the community.
