Aerobic Exercise May Enhance Brain Health in Postmenopausal Women

New research indicates that engaging in regular aerobic exercise can significantly enhance cognitive functions in postmenopausal women, specifically in areas such as planning and decision-making skills. The findings suggest that a consistent routine of moderate aerobic activity may serve as an effective strategy for maintaining brain health during and after menopause.

Published in the *Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease*, the study highlights the potential cognitive benefits that can arise from just three to six months of regular exercise. The research emphasizes the importance of physical activity for preserving cognitive function, particularly given that women represent approximately two-thirds of Alzheimer’s disease cases.

Dr. Dung Trinh, a physician at MemorialCare Medical Group and Chief Medical Officer of Healthy Brain Clinic, pointed out that while the results are promising, the study has limitations. He noted that the research was a secondary analysis of a smaller cohort, suggesting that further confirmation is needed before drawing definitive conclusions.

The study involved 93 cognitively healthy women aged 20 to 67, with 43% identified as postmenopausal. All participants had below-average cardiorespiratory fitness levels and were not regular exercisers. They were divided into two groups—one followed a six-month aerobic exercise program, while the other participated in a stretching and toning routine.

Participants who engaged in 45 minutes of aerobic exercise four times a week experienced the most significant improvements in executive function. These cognitive advantages became noticeable after three months and continued to enhance throughout the program. Executive function includes skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, and self-control, which are essential for managing daily tasks and making decisions.

Experts indicate that while stretching and mobility exercises are beneficial for flexibility and stress reduction, aerobic activities provide a more substantial cardiovascular stimulus that can lead to improved brain health. Dr. Kecia Gaither, an OB-GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist, emphasized that aerobic exercise can enhance cardiovascular fitness, which is closely linked to cognitive health.

Moderate aerobic activities include brisk walking, cycling, water aerobics, dancing, and even active gardening. These activities increase heart rate and breathing while allowing individuals to converse comfortably.

Aerobic exercise positively impacts brain health in several ways. It can enhance cardiovascular function, reduce vascular risk factors, and promote brain plasticity. Although exercise does not prevent Alzheimer’s disease or slow dementia progression, it can enhance overall cognitive function as individuals age. Regular aerobic activity may protect brain regions critical for memory, such as the hippocampus, and support the integrity of brain connections important for focus and information processing.

Research shows that cognitive decline is more prevalent in women than men, particularly after menopause. Hormonal changes, including decreased estrogen levels, are believed to contribute to this increased risk. Recognizing the need for more focused research, Dr. Trinh noted that menopause is often overlooked in studies related to exercise and brain health, despite the higher incidence of dementia among women.

Future studies involving larger populations and comprehensive assessments of menopause could provide deeper insights into how aerobic exercise influences cognitive function and potentially lower long-term dementia risk.
