Former Weightlifter Achieves Remarkable 80-Pound Weight Loss Through Innovative Procedure
Dana Bichler, a former competitive weightlifter, has successfully transformed his health by shedding over 80 pounds through a minimally invasive weight loss procedure known as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). After years of battling weight regain despite various diets and medications, Bichler found a solution that not only helped him lose weight but also improved his overall quality of life.
Once weighing between 200 to 210 pounds during his competitive years, Bichler’s transition away from weightlifting led to gradual weight gain. Attempts to maintain his fitness through running and other activities were unsuccessful, as he continued to struggle with his weight. Although he managed to lose around 50 pounds through dieting, this weight was often regained, leading him to reach a peak weight of nearly 300 pounds.
In his pursuit of effective weight management, Bichler visited a weight-loss clinic, where he found the experience restrictive and unsustainable. “It’s a life of deprivation,” he reflected, recognizing the challenges of sticking to such a plan. He also experimented with GLP-1 medications, which initially aided in weight loss but eventually lost their effectiveness, leaving him frustrated and without lasting results.
A turning point came when Bichler was diagnosed with fatty liver disease, a serious condition linked to his obesity. With a family history of the disease affecting his siblings, he realized the urgency of addressing his health. “I had to do something,” he stated, acknowledging that his previous efforts were not yielding the needed results.
After thorough research and consultations, Bichler decided to undergo ESG at the University of Minnesota. This procedure, which utilizes an endoscopic suturing system, involves folding the stomach to create a smaller sleeve without any removal of stomach tissue or incisions. This approach allows patients to eat less while feeling satisfied. The procedure typically allows for a quick recovery, with patients returning to daily activities within days.
In March 2025, Bichler underwent the ESG procedure at 67 years old. At the time, he weighed in the 260s, but today, he proudly maintains a weight of 178 pounds. While the initial recovery posed challenges, including dietary restrictions that required him to adapt to a new way of eating, Bichler persevered.
Despite facing emotional hurdles post-surgery, including bouts of depression, he was able to adjust his lifestyle with the help of his healthcare team. Bichler now engages in regular exercise, enjoying newfound energy and mobility that allow him to participate in activities he once found difficult, such as farming and spending quality time with his grandson.
“Before, I’d be sucking air trying to keep up,” he noted, now reveling in the ability to be active with his family and pursue his interests with vigor. As he embraces his transformed life, Bichler feels rejuvenated and energized, stating, “I haven’t felt this good in 30 years. It’s like starting all over.”
