Nearly 72,000 deer were harvested during the most recent deer gun season in Ohio, more than 3,500 above the average during the past three years.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife says hunters checked 71,932 white-tailed deer at the conclusion of the week on Sunday, nearly 2,000 more than in 2021. The three-year average in Ohio is 68,534.
The harvest includes 26,355 bucks (37%), 36,546 does (51%) and 7,983 button bucks (11%). Bucks that had already shed their antlers or bucks with antlers less than 3 inches in length accounted for 1% of deer taken (1,048).
The top 10 counties for deer taken were Coshocton (2,457), Muskingum (2,326), Tuscarawas (2,321), Ashtabula (1,987), Knox (1,909), Carroll (1,902), Guernsey (1,848), Licking (1,729), Washington (1,628), and Holmes (1,521). Coshocton County also led the state in 2021 with 2,403 deer checked.
Only 45 deer were checked in Cuyahoga County. Geauga County had 603, Lake 163, Lorain 661, Medina 724, Portage 683, Stark 1,030, Summit 187, and Trumbull 1,104.
“Congratulations to all the successful hunters who participated in this year’s weeklong gun season,” Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker said in a statement. “With an additional gun weekend coming up, hunters still have a chance to harvest a deer.
Deer gun season opens again for the weekend of Dec. 17-18.
