UN Urges Immediate Humanitarian Access to Yemen’s Taiz Amid Ongoing Siege
The United Nations has called for urgent humanitarian assistance to be allowed into Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, which has been under siege by Houthi fighters since early October. The prolonged blockade has severely restricted essential supplies, leaving the city’s residents in dire need of aid.
The Houthi forces, aligned with Iran, have effectively encircled Taiz, cutting off the main route that connects the city to Aden, the interim capital of the internationally recognized government supported by Saudi Arabia. This blockade exacerbates the already critical humanitarian situation in Taiz, where the population is facing shortages of food, medical supplies, and other essential resources.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized the urgent need for aid to be provided without delay. He stated, “Humanitarian aid must be immediately allowed to enter the city and its passage must be facilitated,” highlighting the necessity for unimpeded access to assist those affected by the ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been escalating for years, largely due to the civil war that has ravaged the country since 2015. The conflict has left millions of Yemenis suffering from famine and disease, with the situation in besieged areas like Taiz being particularly dire. The United Nations has repeatedly urged all parties involved in the conflict to allow humanitarian access and protect civilians, yet these calls have often gone unheeded.
The blockade of Taiz not only impacts civilians’ access to food and medical care but also restricts the delivery of vital humanitarian assistance from various organizations working to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people. The UN and various NGOs have reported that many residents are facing starvation, and the lack of medical supplies has made it nearly impossible to treat common illnesses and injuries.
Local authorities and humanitarian groups have expressed their growing concern about the implications of the blockade. They warn that without immediate intervention and the lifting of restrictions, the situation could worsen dramatically, leading to increased mortality rates among the vulnerable population, particularly women and children.
As the international community watches, the UN continues to advocate for immediate access to humanitarian aid in Taiz. The organization’s call to action underscores the importance of cooperation among all parties involved, stressing that the lives of countless civilians depend on the delivery of essential supplies to those trapped in the besieged city.
