Another cold-storage food warehouse is potentially coming to Northeast Ohio, this time slated for Lorain County.
Berkshire Refrigerated Warehousing plans to build a 200,000 square-foot refrigerated warehouse in Sheffield. The company provides storage for both refrigerated and frozen foods, while also packing foods for companies. The project received a tax credit worth an estimated $545,000 from Ohio’s Tax Credit Authority Monday morning.
The warehouse would serve customers in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The facility would create 90 full-time jobs, according to a press release from Team NEO, Greater Cleveland’s JobsOhio partner. The warehouse would need to create and keep those jobs, and generate $5 million of payroll, to claim its tax credit.
The project is slated for North Abbe Road.
Ted Grzywacz, the company’s president, said in a news release that they chose the location because of its strategic position and because of assistance from Sheffield, Lorain County and the state.
The need for cold storage in the region has been highlighted in the last year. Orlando Baking will be building a 150,000 square-foot facility on Opportunity Corridor in Cleveland. Giant Eagle took over operations of a cold storage facility in Solon owned by Lineage Logistics.
More cold storage will help an already thriving food industry in Northeast Ohio, Team Neo CEO Bill Koehler said in a news release.
Berkshire Refrigerated Warehousing is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and has 200,000 square-feet of cold storage in the Chicago area, along with 90,000 square feet of dry storage. The Ohio Department of Development said Ohio was competing with Illinois for the project.
