Ohioans paid record prices for gas for a Thanksgiving holiday this year, but drivers could see a much different situation by the time Christmas arrives.
Decreasing demand and the falling price of oil are causing a decline in gas prices in Ohio and across the nation, according to AAA, and several stations in the Cleveland area already are listing prices well-below $3 per gallon.
A Gas USA on the 3900 block of West 117th Street in Cleveland was selling gas for $2.74 per gallon, the cheapest in the area, according to gasbuddy.com. In East Cleveland, a Marathon station on the 16000 block of Euclid Avenue was listing at $2.79 per gallon.
Out further east in Lake County, a Love’s Travel Stop at the Ohio 528 exit from Interstate 90 in Madison was at $2.82 per gallon. There were 10 stations overall reportedly selling gas for under $3.
That’s well-below the national average of $3.52 per gallon and the Ohio average of $3.41 per gallon. In Cuyahoga County, the average price is $3.35. The only county bordering Cuyahoga with higher gas prices is Geauga County, which is averaging $3.47.

Reports say the price of gas is expected to continue dropping and could be below $3 per gallon nationally by Christmas. There are worries that protests and strict COVID-19 restrictions in China will hurt demand. Signs of recession in some major nations’ economies also are driving oil prices down, reports say.
Texas currently has the cheapest gas in the nation, averaging $2.88 per gallon, AAA reports. It’s highest in California at $5 per gallon, but the state did record one of the largest drops in price last week at 21 cents.
Gas prices peaked in the Cleveland area on June 9, reaching $5.07 per gallon.
