How This Active Mom of 2 Is Thriving With ‘Chemo-Resistant’ Colon Cancer

Heather Kaiser, a dedicated mother of two and lawyer, has found herself on an unexpected journey after being diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of 42. Initially seeking medical advice for gastrointestinal issues in early 2025, she was assured by her doctor that her symptoms were likely related to hormones or dietary concerns. Feeling reassured, Kaiser did not suspect that her life was about to change dramatically.

However, when her symptoms persisted, she found herself in the emergency room, only to be sent home once more with a diagnosis of “women’s issues.” It wasn’t until a follow-up appointment with her OB-GYN that she was referred to a gastroenterologist who took her concerns seriously. A colonoscopy revealed a shocking reality: a mass the size of a fist was discovered, leading to a diagnosis of colon cancer.

Despite initially believing that the cancer was caught early and would be manageable through surgery, Kaiser faced a more complex situation. After undergoing surgery in June 2025, her surgeon expressed concerns that not all cancer cells had been removed, leading to further testing and a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer. The cancer had metastasized to the lymph nodes around her lungs and liver, complicating her prognosis.

Kaiser learned that her cancer was driven by a rare BRAF mutation, complicating her treatment options as it turned out to be chemo-resistant. Faced with an uncertain future, she joined a clinical trial for an innovative treatment protocol designed specifically for her mutation. In August 2025, she became one of the first participants in the BREAKWATER clinical trial, incorporating a new drug regimen aimed at targeting her cancer.

While the initial weeks of treatment were grueling, Kaiser found relief through the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program, which helped manage her nausea and other side effects. After just eight rounds of treatment, a CT scan revealed a remarkable response: no evidence of disease. This unexpected result left both Kaiser and her medical team astonished.

Despite her positive response to treatment, Kaiser understands that her mutation is not curable, and ongoing treatment is necessary. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a full life despite her diagnosis, balancing her responsibilities as a mother, lawyer, and cancer patient. With the support of her family and community, she has managed to navigate the challenges of living with cancer while continuing to be present for her young sons.

Kaiser’s journey showcases the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of proactive health management. She encourages others facing similar battles to prioritize their lives and treat cancer as just one part of their journey, rather than allowing it to dictate their existence. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, it is possible to lead a fulfilling life.
