CLEVELAND, Ohio — The state of Ohio on Thursday reported 8,731 new cases of COVID-19 in its weekly dashboard update, the most since the state switched to weekly updates of COVID-19 case numbers in March.
That averages to about 1,247 new cases per day over seven days. The seven-day average of new cases per week has climbed since the week ending March 31, when the average was just over 443 new cases per day.
This means a near tripling of cases since the last week of March, yet well below winter levels when the rolling average topped 20,000 a day in mid- to late-January.
The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 has now reached 2,697,058.
Ohio’s death toll since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 38,428, up 68 since the last report.
A total of 7,308,256 Ohioans have received at least one vaccination, representing about 66.4% of Ohioans age 5 and up.
Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 23,551 deaths among people reported as unvaccinated, and 1,256 among people reported to be fully vaccinated. And there have been 66,682 hospitalized Ohioans who were not fully vaccinated, and 4,534 fully vaccinated people hospitalized.
The state does not report for COVID-19 cases whether people were vaccinated.
The total cases being reported recently likely are understated, as some people do not report at-home tests and others may not be testing at all.
