CATAWBA ISLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio — An 81-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Ottawa County and the use of alcohol or drugs is a suspected factor, according to the State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at about 8:34 p.m. Thursday on Northwest Catawba Road at the intersection of Abbey Lane, a news release from the patrol says. A 2020 Dodge Ram pickup driven by a 41-year-old Huron man was driving south on Northwest Catawba Road when a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis pulled out of a private driveway in front of the Dodge. The pickup crashed into the side of the Grand Marquis.
The driver of the Mercury, John Pirnstill, 81, of Catawba Island Township, was killed in the crash. Troopers say Pirnstill was wearing a seatbelt.
The pickup truck driver also was wearing a seatbelt and suffered “non-incapacitating injuries,” according to the patrol.
The crash remains under investigation, but the news release says alcohol and/or drug use are believed to be a factor. There was no report of charges being filed.
