Authorities with the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office tell WQOW Channel 18 the attack occurred Friday night. The couple noticed the bear eating from a bird feeder in the backyard of their home and they opened a window and yelled at it in an attempt to scare it off.
The bear instead turned toward the home and charged through the window, WSAW Channel 7 reports. It got inside the home and began attacking the husband and wife, with their children asleep in their bedrooms in the house.
WAOW Channel 9 reports the couple tried to fight the bear off, first grabbing a kitchen knife and stabbing it. The husband managed to get a firearm and shot the bear, killing it. Both the husband and wife suffered multiple injuries, including bites, and were treated and released at a hospital. Their children were not injured.
Officials with the sheriff’s department tell WAOW the bear was a female and a cub was seen running off when the bear charged the house.
