A convenience store cashier reportedly being threatened by a customer in an argument over incorrect change fired a handgun, critically wounding another person who wasn’t involved in the dispute, police say.
The incident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday at a store on the 800 block of Lovers Lane in East Akron, police say. The cashier tells police that a man became angry during a dispute over incorrect change and began throwing things at her, trying to grab her through a Plexiglass divider and threatening to kill her.
The cashier pulled out a handgun and a shot was fired, hitting another customer uninvolved in the dispute in the chest. The 48-year-old man was taken to Summa Health Akron City Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.
The male suspect left the store but was later arrested at a residence on the 800 block of Bertha Avenue in East Akron, police say. Andre Lee, 34, has been charged with aggravated menacing. Police say he also had two outstanding arrest warrants, one for an unspecified felony.
Lee and the cashier were taken to the police station for questioning. Police did not say if the cashier could face charges.
