An empty former Kmart at 17840 Bagley Road will be transformed into the Cleveland Clinic Middleburg Heights Family Health Center, with a targeted opening date of mid-summer 2023.
Cleveland Clinic, Premier Development Partners and Middleburg Heights officials announced the project Wednesday (Sept. 7).
The existing 93,000-square-foot structure will be fully renovated to accommodate specialty and primary care. A lab, drive-thru pharmacy and radiology imaging services also will be available.
“We’re very excited to expand our medical corridor in Middleburg Heights,” Mayor Matt Castelli . “This is another building vacancy being filled, and we are getting extremely productive use in the old Kmart site. It will bring 300-plus good-paying jobs to the city.”
Dr. Donald A. Malone, President of Ohio Hospitals and Family Health Centers at Cleveland Clininc, said the new full-service health facility taps into a need for the Middleburg Heights community.
He noted that a similar project resulted after renovating an abandoned Summit County big box store to create Cleveland Clinic Stow-Falls Express and Outpatient Care in 2018.
“Middleburg Heights is a very populated community, and it’s a place where we really haven’t had much outpatient capacity,” Malone said. “Bringing our primary and specialty care into the community is exciting.”
The majority of the Cleveland Clinic’s service lines will be offered.
“With this kind of space, we’re able to bring our world-class quality of care closer to home,” Malone said.
For Premier Development Partners, finding the perfect location was key.
“Our goal in any project is always to find the highest and best user for a facility, as well as for the overall community,” Premier Development Partners President/CFO Spencer Pisczak explained.
“In this particular case, on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s a 10-plus.”
Brian Lenahan, Premier’s senior vice president of development, added that convenient and easy patient access to the facility, to Bagley and Engle roads, and to the highway made it the ideal site.
“This project further solidifies the transformation to a more viable economic and business model in our community,” Middleburg Heights Economic Development Director Charles Bichara said.
“It will add to our medical corridor, which now will be well over 1.6 million square feet of medical and medical office space.”
