A former physician in southwest Ohio who once worked at a nearby college is facing multiple criminal charges after authorities say he sexually assaulted 15 female patients over several years.
Donald Gronbeck, 42, of Bath Township near Xenia, was indicted on 50 counts, including nine counts of rape, 10 counts of sexual battery, 15 counts of gross sexual imposition and 16 counts of sexual imposition, according to Greene County Common Pleas Court records. He is being held in the Greene County Jail.
“This case represents every woman’s nightmare,” Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said during a news conference Monday, WYSO FM/92.3 reports. “A physician is someone that we all trust to act in our best interest, to be professional, to have a level of detachment. To turn medical treatment into a sexual assault is a incredibly graphic and brutal betrayal of trust.”
According to WBNS Channel 10, Gronbeck was the campus physician at Antioch College in Yellow Springs from 2015 through 2019. He also maintained a practice in Yellow Springs, WBNS reports.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Gronbeck last year after receiving complaints from patients, WDTN Channel 2 reports. Investigators say the assaults at Gronbeck’s private practice and on the Antioch campus.
WBNS reports Gronbeck surrendered his medical license earlier this year after he was suspended by the State Medical Board of Ohio because of complaints from patients. Investigators believe more victims might come forward.
Gronbeck is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday. If convicted, he faces up to 80 years in prison, WYSO reports.
