A 41-year-old man was arrested after he got into a fight with a woman during a repast gathering at a community center in West Akron, pointing a gun at her and punching her in the face, police say.
At about 4:30 p.m. Friday, a person flagged down a police officer and said there was a man with a gun at the Lawton Street Community Center on the 1200 block of Lawton Street, police say. The officer drove to the scene and found a large crowd at a repast.
People at the scene told the officer there was a man sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot, saying he had pointed a gun at a 30-year-old woman during a fight, then assaulted her just minutes earlier. The woman reportedly had asked the suspect to leave after he became combative with several people at the gathering.
As officers approached the car, which had multiple children inside, they reportedly saw the suspect reach under the rear seat. He was ordered from the vehicle and officers found a loaded handgun inside, police say.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was charged with aggravated menacing and sent to the Summit County Jail. Additional charges are pending.
