Summit County Provides Free Lyft Rides Over Fourth of July Weekend to Curb Impaired Driving

In an effort to promote safety and reduce incidents of drunk driving during the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations, Summit County officials are rolling out a program that offers free Lyft rides. The initiative will provide residents with access to 600 ride codes, each valued at up to $20, to be used over the holiday weekend.

The program aims to encourage responsible choices among those celebrating Independence Day, a time often marked by gatherings, barbecues, and fireworks. With a rise in alcohol consumption during the holiday, Summit County leaders are taking proactive steps to ensure that residents have safe transportation options following their festivities.

County Executive Ilene Shapiro emphasized the importance of the initiative. “We want our residents to enjoy their Fourth of July celebrations, but we also want to ensure that everyone gets home safely,” she stated. The use of ride-sharing services like Lyft can help mitigate the risks associated with impaired driving, which can lead to serious accidents and tragic consequences.

To access the free ride codes, residents can visit the Summit County website, where they will find instructions on how to obtain and redeem the codes. It is recommended that users download the Lyft app and set up an account in advance to streamline the process. The ride codes can be applied to trips taken from July 1 through July 5, providing flexibility for users throughout the holiday weekend.

In addition to the ride-sharing program, county officials are also collaborating with local law enforcement to enhance awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Increased patrols and checkpoints will be established to deter impaired driving and promote safe travel. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, whether that means designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or taking advantage of the free Lyft ride offer.

This initiative is part of Summit County’s broader commitment to public safety and responsible community engagement. By providing accessible transportation options, officials hope to foster an environment where residents can celebrate responsibly without the fear of impaired driving.

As the Fourth of July approaches, residents are reminded to prioritize safety and make informed decisions about their travel plans. The free Lyft rides serve as a valuable resource, ensuring that the holiday remains a time of joy and celebration rather than sorrow and regret.
