Westlake High School Bands Achieve Superior Ratings at State Event

Westlake High School’s symphonic band and wind ensemble have both been awarded Superior ratings at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Band Adjudicated Event, held on April 24. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the music programs at the high school, as Superior is the highest rating that can be awarded at the event.

The annual OMEA event serves as a platform for high school bands across the state to showcase their musical talent and receive constructive feedback from experienced adjudicators. This year, Westlake’s musicians prepared rigorously for their performances, which were evaluated based on various criteria including tone quality, technique, and overall musicality.

The recognition of achieving a Superior rating reflects the hard work and dedication of both the students and their instructors. The bands performed a selection of challenging pieces, demonstrating not only their technical skills but also their ability to work cohesively as a group. The success at the state level highlights the commitment of Westlake High School to fostering a strong music education program.

Director of Bands, Mr. John Smith, expressed immense pride in his students’ accomplishments. “The students put in countless hours of practice, and their hard work truly paid off,” he said. “Receiving a Superior rating is a testament to their talent and determination, and it’s rewarding to see their efforts recognized.”

The bands’ performances were well-received by the audience and adjudicators alike, with many praising their musical interpretations and the emotional depth they brought to their pieces. The event not only serves as a competition but also as a learning experience, where students receive valuable feedback that can help them grow as musicians.

In addition to the accolades earned at the OMEA event, the Westlake music program has a history of success, regularly producing award-winning ensembles. The supportive community and dedicated staff play a crucial role in nurturing the students’ passion for music.

With the recent recognition, the Westlake High School bands are now gearing up for their upcoming spring concert, where they will showcase their repertoire one more time for friends and family. The concert is expected to be a celebration of their achievements and a chance for the community to come together and support the talented young musicians.

As the school year progresses, the bands are hopeful that this recognition will inspire not only current members but also future students to engage with the music program, ensuring its continued success for years to come.
