A 24-year-old man was killed and two people were wounded after shots were fired while a large crowd watched a fireworks display on the city’s West Side, police say.
Arnold Hoyle of Cleveland died of his wounds at MetroHealth Medical Center after he was wounded in the hip area in the shooting on the 12200 block of Emery Avenue, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police were called to Emery Avenue just after 1 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of people with weapons. When officers arrived, a large crowd had gathered and they found Hoyle with a gunshot wound, police say. Officers gave Hoyle medical assistance until he was taken by ambulance to MetroHealth.
A 21-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to a leg, while a 26-year-old man was shot in both legs, police say. The 21-year-old was taken by ambulance to MetroHealth, while the second man was taken to Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital by a private vehicle, according to police. Their names were not released and their conditions were unavailable.
Police say “multiple people” were shooting during the incident and that several cars were hit by gunfire. No arrests have been made.
The shootings are part of a violent July 4 holiday weekend in Cleveland and not the only one involving a crowd watching fireworks.
At about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the 9400 block of East 141st Street. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old man, identified by the medical examiner’s office as Kalen Vines of Euclid, with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body. A second man, identified as Kevontae Antonio Deshawn Ruffin, 24, of Euclid, was found, also with multiple gunshot wounds, police say.
Both men were taken to University Hospitals, but they died of their wounds. Investigators say the shooting occurred while a large crowd was gathered for a fireworks display. There were at least 13 reported shootings during a 24-hour period beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, with four people killed and 20 wounded.
