Healthgrades Recognizes Top Hospitals for Specialty Care and Outpatient Procedures

Healthgrades has unveiled its 2027 Specialty Excellence Outpatient Awards and Specialty State Rankings, highlighting hospitals that have demonstrated exceptional patient outcomes across 19 specialty care areas and various outpatient procedures. This annual recognition aims to guide patients in making informed decisions about their healthcare options.

As patients increasingly consider hospital quality when selecting physicians, the findings from Healthgrades reveal that about 80% of individuals prioritize the reputation of a hospital during their search for a healthcare provider. Furthermore, a significant 71% of patients reported that they would be willing to switch doctors to access a higher-rated hospital.

Dr. Alana Biggers, a medical advisor at Healthgrades, emphasized the importance of these awards in helping consumers find high-quality care tailored to their needs. “Navigating the complex healthcare system can feel daunting,” she said. “Taking a proactive stance to understand where to access superior care can enhance your healthcare journey and overall experience.”

The significance of high-quality care cannot be overstated. Healthgrades estimates that if all hospitals had performed at a five-star rating level from 2023 to 2025, over 227,000 lives could potentially have been saved, alongside avoiding more than 158,000 complications. This stark statistic underscores the growing gap between high-performing hospitals and those rated poorly, prompting the need for patients to seek out the best options available.

Healthgrades categorizes its awards into three main areas: the Specialty Excellence Awards, which acknowledge hospitals with outstanding clinical performance across 19 specialties; the Outpatient Awards, focusing on leaders in outpatient orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, and prostate care; and the Specialty State Rankings, which identify top hospitals across various specialties in eligible states.

The awards are based on an extensive evaluation of patient outcomes at around 4,500 hospitals, assessing data from 31 common procedures and conditions. The recipients represent the top 15% of hospitals specializing in these areas.

The rise of outpatient care has been notable, with a dramatic increase in procedures being performed outside traditional inpatient settings. For instance, outpatient hip replacements grew by 81% from 2020 to 2025, while inpatient procedures saw a 75% decline during the same period. This shift reflects advancements in medical technology and a greater emphasis on preventive care.

However, Dr. Biggers cautioned that as the demand for outpatient services grows, healthcare systems must ensure that these services are adequately staffed and supported. Effective communication and coordination among healthcare providers are essential to maintain both continuity and quality of care.

The Healthgrades Specialty State Rankings allow patients to find top-performing hospitals in their area, facilitating access to the best care for specific conditions or procedures. The rankings rely on clinical performance data sourced from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Healthgrades aims to empower patients by providing transparent methodologies for its awards and ratings, helping individuals make better-informed choices when it comes to their healthcare. The organization’s Specialty Excellence Patient Advocate Center offers resources to assist patients in navigating their options effectively.
