Keto Diet May Offer Benefits Beyond Weight Loss
Recent research indicates that a ketogenic (keto) diet could provide significant health advantages for individuals struggling with obesity, surpassing the benefits of more traditional diets like the Mediterranean or low-fat plant-forward options.
A study published in the journal *Cell Metabolism* reveals that participants who adhered to a keto diet saw about half of those with prediabetes no longer meeting the criteria for the condition. Furthermore, this diet demonstrated superior improvements in liver and metabolic health compared to the other diets assessed.
The findings suggest that a keto diet could be a viable option for individuals dealing with obesity, prediabetes, and fatty liver disease. To explore the metabolic impacts of the three dietary approaches, researchers conducted a clinical trial with 42 participants diagnosed with obesity, prediabetes, and fatty liver disease.
Participants were randomly assigned to one of three diet groups: keto, Mediterranean, or low-fat plant-forward. Each participant received their meals from the research team and attended weekly meetings with a dietitian to ensure adherence to their chosen diet.
The keto diet provided 4% of calories from carbohydrates and 73% from fats, while the Mediterranean diet consisted of 50% carbohydrates and 35% fats. The plant-forward diet featured 70% carbohydrates and just 15% fats, tailored to promote a weight loss of approximately 10% over four to five months.
At the end of the study, all diets resulted in notable reductions in body fat and improved insulin sensitivity, enhancing participants’ ability to regulate blood sugar. However, individuals on the keto diet exhibited the most significant enhancements in liver and metabolic markers. Liver fat declined by an average of 67% in the keto group, compared to 45% in the other groups.
Dr. Max Petersen, the study’s lead author from Washington University School of Medicine, noted a surprising outcome: participants on the keto diet did not experience increased blood fat or cholesterol levels despite a high-fat intake.
The research team also tracked participants’ metabolic responses by testing their blood throughout a 24-hour period, discovering that those on the keto diet had the highest increase in glucagon, a hormone that aids fat loss in the liver. Additionally, the keto group showed a marked reduction in blood insulin levels, which can further aid in decreasing liver fat.
By the conclusion of the study, approximately 50% of the keto diet participants no longer qualified as prediabetic, compared to 29% in the Mediterranean group and just 7% in the plant-forward group.
While the study’s small sample size and short duration present some limitations, experts agree that the results underscore the importance of dietary composition in liver health, even when weight loss is consistent across different diets.
