Wellness Apps and Medically Tailored Meals Help Slow Weight Gain After GLP-1 Treatments

Weight regain is a common issue for individuals who discontinue GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). Research indicates that many people regain a significant portion of the weight they lost within a year of stopping these treatments, often experiencing accelerated weight gain in the first few months after discontinuation. However, a new study suggests that structured support, including the use of digital weight management apps and medically tailored meal plans, may help mitigate this weight regain.

Published in the journal *Obesity Science & Practice*, the study involved 39 adults, averaging 50 years old and having previously lost more than 10% of their body weight while on GLP-1 medications. After stopping their treatment, participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: usual care, a digital weight management app, or medically tailored meals. All participants monitored their weight at home using Bluetooth scales throughout the four-month study.

The usual care group continued receiving standard support from healthcare providers, which varied widely in terms of counseling and resources. In contrast, participants assigned to the digital weight management app used Noom, a platform designed to assist with weight loss through behavioral strategies, including food and exercise tracking and educational lessons about eating behaviors. The medically tailored meals group received a selection of 10 nutritious, portion-controlled meals each week, designed by registered dietitians to meet specific health needs.

After four months, participants using either the digital app or the medically tailored meals experienced significantly less weight regain compared to those receiving usual care. The usual care group regained an estimated 10.75% of their body weight, while those in the Noom group and the medically tailored meals group regained only 3.6% and 3.58%, respectively. This suggests that structured nutritional and behavioral support can play a crucial role in maintaining weight loss after stopping GLP-1 medications.

Experts emphasize the importance of ongoing support for individuals on a weight loss journey. Dr. Mir Ali, a medical director specializing in weight loss, noted that these findings highlight the multifaceted nature of obesity management, which should combine medication with dietary and behavioral changes. However, the study’s small size and short duration indicate a need for larger, more extended trials to better understand the long-term effectiveness of these support methods.

While some experts advocate for long-term use of GLP-1 medications, stating that obesity should be treated as a chronic condition, others encourage maintaining healthy habits learned during treatment. Dr. Denise Pate emphasized that the goal of GLP-1 medications is to help patients adopt healthier eating patterns, such as recognizing satiety and moderating portion sizes.

To support weight maintenance after stopping GLP-1 medications, experts recommend a balanced diet high in protein and vegetables, regular physical activity, and the use of tracking apps. It’s essential to remember that while GLP-1 medications can facilitate significant weight loss, they are most effective when combined with a healthy lifestyle and regular healthcare support.
