Heart Failure Couldn’t Stop This Couple from Saying ‘I Do’ in the ICU

In a poignant testament to love and resilience, Daniel and Julia Phan tied the knot in a hospital’s intensive care unit just days before Daniel was set to undergo life-saving surgery. Their story begins with a childhood connection; the couple first met as kids when Julia’s mother was employed at Daniel’s family’s nail salon. Although they drifted apart for several years, they reconnected on social media and began dating in 2023, both in their early 30s.

Daniel, who was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) at the age of 11, faced significant health challenges due to this genetic heart condition. HCM causes the heart muscle to thicken, making it difficult to pump blood effectively. Throughout his adolescence, Daniel managed his condition with a pacemaker and enjoyed a relatively stable health period, but complications arose in his early 20s, including arrhythmias triggered by physical exertion.

In January 2025, Daniel’s health took a dramatic turn when he experienced a severe arrhythmia that required emergency medical attention. He was soon transferred to Piedmont Heart in Atlanta, where it was determined that a heart transplant was not feasible. Instead, he received a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which helps pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body when the heart is too weak to do so on its own.

Amidst the uncertainty of his health, Daniel proposed to Julia while hospitalized. “It was a huge commitment for her,” he reflected, noting her unwavering support during his illness. Julia accepted his proposal, and the couple wed on January 29, 2025, surrounded by family and friends in the ICU, with their uncle officiating the ceremony.

The following day, Julia rushed to the courthouse to obtain their marriage license, ensuring that Daniel would be covered under her insurance for the LVAD surgery. Time was of the essence, as doctors warned that prolonged life support could worsen his condition. Just days after their wedding, Daniel underwent the procedure to have the Abbott HeartMate 3 LVAD implanted.

Recovery post-surgery was challenging. Daniel faced initial complications, including fatigue and the need for additional medical procedures. However, after several months of physical therapy, he began to regain his strength and confidence. “I can go upstairs now and feel a little tired, but I know the LVAD is doing its job,” he shared.

Today, the couple is thriving despite the challenges they faced. They hope to start a family soon and have embraced life with newfound gratitude. Julia has even taken on a role in Abbott’s Care Partner Ambassador Program, helping others navigate similar experiences.

Reflecting on their journey, Daniel credits Julia for her unwavering support. He remarked, “She’s done everything for me.” Julia, in turn, believes that their challenges have made their relationship even more meaningful, stating, “Life looks different, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Together, they embody the power of love in the face of adversity, proving that even the toughest circumstances can bring people closer together.
