Want to Recover Like an Olympian? Allyson Felix Says ‘Fill Your Cup First’
Allyson Felix, one of the most accomplished track and field athletes in U.S. history, is advocating for the importance of rest and recovery, especially in light of her experiences as a mother. With 11 Olympic medals and numerous world championships under her belt, Felix now emphasizes that taking time for oneself is crucial for overall well-being, particularly for caregivers.
In the United States, the lack of paid sick leave is a pressing issue, affecting around 28 million workers, many of whom are low-income caregivers. A recent survey revealed that 80% of employed adults who care for someone at home often cannot afford to take a sick day, with many choosing to work while unwell to avoid risking their jobs. This culture of pushing through illness can lead to burnout, which, if left unchecked, may result in serious health issues like heart disease and diabetes.
Felix has partnered with Theraflu to promote The Right to Rest & Recover Fund, which provides microgrants to families experiencing income loss due to unpaid sick days. The initiative has already distributed over $1 million to assist those in need since its inception in 2021.
As a mother of two young children, Felix understands the challenges of balancing caregiving with personal health. She recognizes that the demands on parents can be overwhelming, especially when illness strikes. “When one of my kids is sick, I’m navigating that double burden if I’m not feeling well,” she shared. Her goal is to make paid sick leave a universal right, a cause she feels passionate about.
Experts in health and wellness echo her sentiments. Dr. Clarinda Hougen, a primary care sports medicine specialist, emphasizes that rest and recovery are essential for everyone, not just athletes. She notes that muscle growth and endurance improve during rest periods rather than during exercise, underscoring the need for adequate sleep and recovery days in any fitness regimen.
To enhance recovery, Dr. Hougen recommends getting at least seven hours of sleep per night, building rest days into workout schedules, and engaging in light activities like walking or yoga following intense exercise. Proper nutrition is also critical for recovery and overall health.
Felix advocates for intentional self-care in her busy life. She strives to prioritize her physical and mental well-being, even amidst the chaos of motherhood. “You have to fill your cup first,” she advises. “You have to be able to do the things that support longevity.”
With her Olympic career behind her, Felix continues to lead an active lifestyle and stays engaged in various projects, including a shoe company and an athletic talent agency. However, she finds her greatest fulfillment in motherhood and in advocating for the rights of working parents.
In her pursuit of balance, Felix emphasizes the importance of recognizing when to rest. She encourages everyone to be intentional about their well-being, reminding us that taking time for recovery is not just beneficial; it’s essential for a sustainable, healthy life.
